WiRED International Recognizes World Cancer Day

February 4 is World Cancer Day. This year’s theme is, “We can. I can.”
United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said, “We must do more to end the many tragedies that cancer inflicts. About one third of cancers can be prevented, while others are curable if diagnosed and treated early. And even when cancer is advanced, patients should benefit from palliative care.”
During his 2016 State of the Union Address, President Barack Obama appointed Vice President Joe Biden to lead a national “Moonshot” initiative to eliminate cancer and pledged $1 billion to seed this program.

Cancer is the leading cause of death worldwide, accounting for more than
8 million lives lost each year. Although progress has been made in cancer prevention and treatment, the global cancer burden continues to rise.
WiRED International offers a Cancer Series for grassroots audiences and health professionals. WiRED’s training modules include an introduction to cancer and cover bladder, brain, breast, cervical, colorectal, pancreatic and prostate cancers and Hodgkin’s lymphoma. WiRED is developing other cancer modules such as those for lung cancer and mesothelioma.
Secretary-General Ban concluded, “On World Cancer Day, let us resolve to end the injustice of preventable suffering from this disease as part of our larger push to leave no one behind.”
